Pre-Order Robert Lucy's "Dogs"

I have always loved dogs, but I had never thought about painting dog portraits until a collector who had bought one of my paintings asked me to paint his black pug named Smudge. He had bought a painting of mine that had a very graphic, pop background and wondered if I might paint Smudge in a similar fashion. I very happily did, and when I finished, a friend saw it and asked me to paint his dog as well. I quickly realized that lots of people love their dogs and might like paintings of them.

Though painting portraits of pets goes back hundreds of years to great masters like the French painter Jean-Baptiste Oudry, most contemporary pet portrait fall in the category of kitsch. If there was still a hierarchy painting subjects, pet portraits would be very low on the list.

Once I started making these paintings, though, I discovered that the subject, to me at least, was deeply profound. Peering into the eyes of our pets is one of the deepest ways to connect to love and comfort. So the subject is Love. I decided that I would like to pursue the subject and do my best to elevate the pet portrait to the best of my ability.

I have now painted close to 200 portraits of people's pets of all kinds. This book contains just 20 of those, all dogs, as they are the majority of what I am asked to paint. It has been a great pleasure to spend time with all of these beautiful faces. I hope to make deep and lasting works of art and I hope that the people who live with these paintings feel the love every time they look at them.
